This isn't a new concept...

Today while I was blow drying my hair Lila got a hold of my rotary cutter and dismantled it. (I'm not even sure I know how to take it all the way apart... because I sure as heck can't figure out how to put it back together!) And  of course she sliced one of her fingers up pretty good. It was all very dramatic, with all the blood and the screaming and the tears, until I got her bandaged up. Once she had calmed down I gently, but firmly, pointed out that her cut was a consequence of playing with my sewing stuff and reminded her, again, that I don't want them to play with my stuff because a lot of it is sharp or pointy and can be dangerous. (I think it was a week ago that she nicked her finger on my dressmaker shears... sigh.)

We picked Evie up from school and she immediately spotted the gauze and band-aid wrapped pinkie. "What happened to your finger, Lila?" Lila told her the sad, sad story, and Evie shook her head and said, "That's why we don't play with Mommy's sewing stuff..."

We then picked Jake up early, for a dentist appointment, and he too wanted to know why Lila's finger was all bandaged. Evie quickly jumped in to explain what had happened. And Jake shook his head and said, "That's why we don't play with Mommy's sewing stuff..."

See. Not a new concept. They've heard it their whole lives. I'm afraid that Lila is going to be my one who has to learn everything by trial and error... for herself... the hard way.
