Blood, sweat and tears...

That's been our day today.

The sweat was mine from trying to clean up my disaster of a kitchen.

I did a load of dishes and cleaned out the fridge, then I took a little break... which turned into a long-ish break.

The blood and the tears were from Evie.

She hasn't bounced back from that last bout of croup two weeks ago.

She's been pale and lethargic.

Now she's not eating.

I took her to the doctors and he did a thorough check-up and ran a few tests...

Then, not seeing any answers, he ordered some blood work.

Shots are bad enough to a five year old, watching them take blood out of your arm is downright traumatic.

(I tried to get her not to look, but apparently that was more scary for her than seeing what was going on.)

We most likely won't get any answers until Monday.

Sigh.

Jake and I had a two hour grocery shopping date night.

He's a lot of fun to be around.

Until he crosses the line to being obnoxious.

We had a good talk about where that line is.

We also had a long talk about self-esteem and self-image.

He doesn't like how his face looks, he thinks it isn't attractive.

It took everything I had not to break down and cry in the produce section when he told me that.

My beautiful boy! That just breaks my heart...

(Seriously though, isn't this a little early for self-esteem issues?)

We had another long talk about the qualities that we should derive our self-worth from. (i.e. kindness, intelligence, sense of humor, the things that really last.)

Jake decreed that when he becomes president his first order of business will be to ban cosmetic advertising that makes people feel bad about themselves.

I say things have come to a sad pass when an 8 year old boy notices that's the tactic most companies take...

AND... I still have to clean the kitchen tomorrow.

Sigh.

Some more.

I think you should take a leaf from Dick Solomon's book Jake, and every morning remind
yourself that you are "GORGEOUS!!"

I'd vote for him.

Oh, what a day! I always worry about if I have girls the self-esteem/self-worth/body image issues that they will have to deal with in our society today, but I guess that is not just isolated to the female gender. That breaks my heart about Jake! He is such a handsome little guy, and smart, and kind . . . it is just so sad that we can so easily distort our perceptions of ourselves :(

Also, I hope that everything comes back okay for Evie and that she starts recovering soon.
